REAL Meeting Notes 26OCT2007
Lorne Donaldson and Neil Payne hosted a meeting for parents and players regarding the new REAL Academy Team and its impacts on the incoming Olympico and Athletico U17 teams. The US Soccer Federation has asked REAL Colorado to participate in the Development Academy to insure that US Soccer is more competitive at the national and international levels. The Development Academy will consist of 64 teams from 8 regions throughout the US. The incoming U17 boys on Olympico and Athletico will be affected by some player movement. At the current time there are approximately 3-4 players that will move to the Olympico Team. The Olympico Team will move to the number 1 position in the U17 age group and now be know as the National Team and the Athletico Team will move to the number 2 position. The new National Team (formerly Olympico) will play in the CASL Shootout in Raleigh, North Carolina on December 14-16, 2007, where ~250 scouts from D1, D2 and D3 schools will be in attendance.
REAL expects a greater commitment from players and parents on the new National Team. The most significant changes will be willingness to travel to showcase tournaments (one more than last season) and a possible weekly practice at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Prior to tryouts, the club would like to know the commitment level of the parents and players. REAL will make a place for each player whatever their level of commitment. The Academy Teams will not compete in the State League or State Cup. There is an Academy Team associated with all MLS Teams including the Rapids. Neil and Lorne feel that Kim's Team has a great shot at State Cup and wants to develop the boys to compete at the highest level. To prepare for this, practices will begin immediately following tryouts and team selection. The Showcase Tournaments will consist of one in the fall, one in the early spring season (most likely Las Vegas or Blue Chip in Houston) and of course, REAL Showcase. REAL is committed to keeping the season fees the same to assist with the financial burden of this change on parents. The final roster for the Academy Team has not been selected but REAL is fairly sure of the numbers with respect to player movement that they presented in tonight's meeting. An estimated movement of 3-4 players from the former National will occur. Kim's Team is now considered the 1st Team at REAL. Lorne and Neil indicated that boys who want to play college soccer will be given first priority on this team. REAL will determine whether the team will play in Elite 1 or Elite 2 and submit their recommendation to the State Association prior to the Spring Season.
The Academy Team will have a minimum of 18 players but can have over 40. REAL can select up to 10 Developmental players from Kim's or Red's team. The Developmental players are allowed to swing between Academy and the state league as long as they do not exceed playing in 6 Academy games. The cost for Academy players will be around $5000.00-6000.00 per season in the first year. Next year, it is doubtful that Academy players will be able to play High School soccer because of the time commitment and travel schedule of the Academy Team. Lorne is the Head Coach of the U18 Academy Team (1989-90) and Neil is the Head Coach of the U16 (1991-92) Academy Team.
Training for the new National Team will be at Redstone with the exception of a potential once weekly practice/scrimmage at Dick's. Players who are unable to play in a showcase tournament because of finals will not be discriminated against in the selection process. REAL will also try to work with families where travel imposes a financial hardship. Please direct any concerns to your coach and REAL.
Please add your comments, additions and corrections to anything that I may have unintentionally represented.
Regards,
Victoria
